You can make and lose money doing both. If you don't know what you are doing, it doesn't really matter which one do you choose.

Stocks are riskier IMO but much easier to buy and sell. Tax deeds require a lot of work – you have to visit the county, ask for info, pat sheriff fees, court fees, might have to deal with eviction, etc.
